Online Marketing and You.

For businesses trying to find out how to market online, one thing becomes obvious very quickly, nothing is marketed online more than how to market online!  From how to’s to why to’s, from experts to gurus, there is an overwhelming amount of information and resources available at your fingertips to help businesses market online successfully.  Some are better than others, but they all share one common link; they don’t take you into consideration.

 

You thought You needed to …

There are many ways to market your business online and some are a good fit for you and others are not. For example, if you’re not one for public speaking, than I would advise against hosting a webinar where you need to present to a large group of strangers.  Conversely, if you are a social gadfly, than I would advise against sitting in your office all day writing content to generate traffic to your website.  This is where the pervasiveness of online marketing starts to show.  Do any amount of trying to discover how to market online and you will quickly learn that;

  • “You need to have high traffic to your website.”
  • “You need to have a blog to attract attention online.”
  • “You need to have a Facebook fan page.”
  • “You need to have SEO to have any online success.”

I hear these all the time from my clients and to a certain extent, they are true.  The only caveat I would make to each one of these, is also the cause of so much distress for my clients.  That caveat is that “you” only need to do what “you” are comfortable with.  Let me put it in better context;

  • “I need to have a blog, but I hate writing.”
  • “I need to have videos on YouTube, but I don’t like being recorded.”
  • “I need to have a Facebook fan page, but I don’t like being on the computer.”

 

Online Marketing is Doing what You are comfortable with

If you are not comfortable doing these things then don’t.  If you are comfortable with doing these things then do.  It is that simple and as a matter of fact, the more “you” are “you,” then the better the response and results will be with your Online Marketing Strategy.

 

Online Marketing gives You options

There are so many ways to market your business online  if you are comfortable with it.  Including the “you” in your marketing strategy only makes it successful if you are comfortable.  Conversely, if you are not comfortable, then don’t submit to the experts and gurus pressure and assume that you need to do any of these things.  Many a successful marketing initiative doesn’t include any “you” in it at all.  Take for example, Kentucky Fried Chicken with Colonel Sanders or Wendy’s with Dave Thomas.  The “you” in those marketing campaigns was successful.  Now what about Chick-fil-a, there is no “you” in their campaign, but you can’t say those cow’s aren’t successful.

 

You need to be YOU

So, “you needing to” do anything within an online marketing campaign is only the case if you are comfortable in doing those things.  If not, there is no reason you cannot have a successful online marketing campaign without the “you” in it.  And as a matter of fact, if you are not comfortable doing what “needs to” be done, then don’t.  It may make things worse.
